Great loss for Bengal: With the passing of Soumitra Chatterjee, Bengal lost a cultural icon who for more than fifty years defined Bengali culture, tradition and art. ‘Soumitra remained deeply rooted in his cultural milieu all his life. He was a Bengali who understood Bengal well because all of its history, values, culture and art had gone into the making of him.'

Lesser known facet: Soumitra says that he would have probably been a carpenter if he had not been an actor. It sounds flippant but his admiration for the craft of carpentry is genuine. It reveals something important about him too. He believes in creativity that is useful, something that will actually be helpful to people.
