Going for a cup of coffee is a social ritual for many. Everyone has a favourite café they like to visit, take time to enjoy drinking coffee and talking to others around them. At Jawahar Kala Kendra, the ‘Cup of Joy’ initiative has been born from the recognition that coffee is an important part of our daily lives and everyone is entitled to it. Indian Coffee House supports this beautiful old tradition of paying for two coffees but consuming only one. The other coffee can be availed by someone later who would be served a coffee for free. The cashless system of ‘Cup of Joy’ was inaugurated on 10 March by the Minister of Art and Culture, Government of Rajasthan, Dr. B.D. Kalla. Now one can digitally pay for a ‘Cup of Joy’ and they will be given a receipt for the same.

Director General, JKK, Ms. Mugdha Sinha said: “This concept of ‘suspended coffee’ is not new. It originated in Naples in Italy where if you feel happy you pay for two coffees – one for yourself and one for someone who comes after. The generous tradition of ‘suspended coffee’ represents humanity, kindness and compassion. It embodies a spirit of solidarity during the difficult times of the pandemic. It is a great initiative to put a smile on someone’s face by simply buying an extra coffee for a stranger. Anyone can avail them, there are no criteria and we will not ask you why you want it. It is for anyone who needs or wants a Cup of Joy”.
