Dimples are generally considered an attractive quality to have. They're associated with a particular type of female beauty epitomized by people like Jennifer Garner, Ariana Grande, Miranda Kerr and Preity Zinta. A sweet appeal with an air of innocence.

A dimple is an anomaly of the muscle that causes a dent in the cheek, especially when the individual smiles. Some people have dimples in both cheeks, others in just one cheek. Babies are likely to have dimples caused by baby fat in their cheeks. When they lose their baby fat as they get older, their dimples disappear.

First off, there are actually two kinds of facial dimples: chin and cheek dimples. Chin dimples are caused by an underlying cleft in the bone of the chin. (The cleft in my skull is so pronounced you can fit an entire thumb in it. Good party trick.) Slightly less happily, the current popular theory among scientists is that cleft chins are actually a result of a hiccup in fetal development, where the left and right sides of the chin haven't fused together properly in the womb.

Dimples are genetic
Some researchers say that dimples are genetic and are inherited from one generation to the other. However, dimples are an irregular dominant trait and therefore, even if both your parents have dimples, it is not necessary that you do, too. However, some specialists also believe that there isn't enough evidence to call dimples a genetic trait.
